President Barack Obama says his administration has consulted with Congress "for some time" about a possible prisoner exchange for the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl.

The 28-year-old Army sergeant from Hailey, Idaho, was released over the weekend by his Taliban captors into the custody of the U.S. military.

In return, the U.S. freed five Taliban detainees from the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Some lawmakers have faulted Obama and the administration for not giving Congress advance notice of the prisoner exchange, as the law requires.

The White House says it had to act quickly to save Bergdahl's life.

Obama commented Tuesday during a news conference in Warsaw, Poland.
