News10NBC is learning new information about the death of a young Army sergeant from Medina.

A report by the Fayetteville Observer in North Carolina says the parachute used by Shaina Schmigel during a training exercise had been suspended. The 21-year-old was found unresponsive during a nighttime training exercise at Fort Bragg. The report says the T-11 parachute she was using was linked to a death in 2011, but it was re-instated after a study found it to be safe. It is not clear at this point if the parachute played a role in Schmigel’s death.

Karie Schmigel, Shaina's mother, said, “I just don't have any words. I really don't. I just don't wish this on any parent whatsoever. It's very hard what I’m going through.”

It's a loss the entire community is feeling.

Lisa Trippensee, Medina resident, said, “This is a very supportive community so if the mother does need anything, everyone will absolutely be here to support her.”

Fort Bragg military officials say Sgt. Shaina Schmigel was killed during an airborne training exercise. The word that the type of parachute she was using was temporarily suspended has people in Medina asking questions.

But so far, there are no answers from the military.

Schmigel said, “My daughter served her country. She did what she could do.”

Military officials at Fort Bragg say the cause of her death is still under investigation.

The family says they are accepting donations at spots around Medina. Rudy’s Restaurant on West Center Street and the Denny’s at the Flying J Travel Plaza near the Thruway in Pembroke.
