A former Rochester Police captain charged with intentionally shooting his son has pleaded guilty to criminal negligent homicide.

Michael Leach was accused of intentionally murdering his son, Matthew, while the two were at a motel in Old Forge in July 2012. In February, a grand jury indicted Leach on a charge of second-degree murder.

Leach and his attorney, Joe Damelio, maintained that Leach thought his son was an intruder in the room when he shot him.

An offer to plead guilty to second-degree manslaughter was presented in August. Leach’s trial date had been delayed because of psychiatric evaluations. His trial was scheduled to start June 16.

Leach will be sentenced in August. He faces a sentence of six months in the Herkimer County Jail.
