A portion of the Fairport Canal Days festival site was shut down Sunday morning after a suspicious package was found in the area.

The area of Main Street and High Street was closed for a brief period Sunday morning, as officers investigated an unattended package that was left at the site.

Police say the package was deemed to be safe and determined to be lost property. The Fairport Mayor says it was just a backpack that a teenager accidentally left at the festival.

“It was what a 14-year-old does, so the police took it seriously and did the checking they had to do. They found the teenager. He came back and claimed it, and, thank goodness, it was a non-issue,” said Mayor Fritz May.

The area was reopened shortly after for the festival's last day.
