Funeral services have been set for the local soldier who died during a training exercise last month.

Calling hours will be held for Sergeant Shaina Schmigel on Tuesday at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel in Batavia starting at 2 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held the following day at the same location on Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Schmigel died May 30 during an airborne training exercise at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. According to a report, a parachute used by Schmigel during a training exercise had been suspended. The report says the T-11 parachute she was using was linked to a death in 2011, but it was re-instated after a study found it to be safe. It is not clear at this point if the parachute played a role in Schmigel’s death.
