Family and friends will gather Tuesday to pay their final respects to a Western New York soldier who died during a training exercise. Calling hours for 21-year-old Sergeant Shaina Schmigel will be held from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Michael Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel in Batavia. A funeral will take place Wednesday at 11 a.m. On Monday, Schmigel's body returned to Western New York, where it was escorted from the Buffalo Airport to Medina by members of the Patriot Guard Riders.

Schmigel died more than a week ago during an airborne training exercise at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. According to a report, a parachute used by Schmigel was linked to a death in 2011, but it was re-instated after a study found it to be safe. It is not clear at this point if the parachute played a role in Schmigel's death.
