Another vehicle window was hit by something while driving. This time, it was a school bus with kids on board. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
A school bus driver, bringing kids back from a field trip, pulled over on 490 in Gates Wednesday afternoon after noticing the bus windshield was cracked. He told police he's not sure where the incident happened.
Police have not yet connected this to 13 other reports of vehicle windows being hit on area highways over the past couple of months. Still, it is unsettling for parents to hear about.
The bus was carrying six students from Scribner Road Elementary School and four staff members. Parents were notified Wednesday afternoon about what happened.
Susan Lombardo, Scribner Road parent, said, “It's crazy because these are children that are being attacked now.”
Susan Lombardo couldn't believe it when the message came from her child's school. A school bus headed back to Scribner had pulled over on the highway when the driver realized the windshield was cracked. The driver thinks whatever caused it happened on Route 531. The bus was coming from Springdale Farm in Spencerport. Two of Lombardo's children attend Scribner. They were not on the bus.
Lombardo said, “If they're now going to do it to school buses, obviously, they have no respect for anybody and they don't care.”
The driver pulled over on Interstate 490 near Gates Chili High School and called 911. Sheriff's deputies came immediately and began to investigate. So far, the sheriff's office says investigators have found nothing that indicates someone fired at the bus or that connects this incident to more than a dozen other similar highway incidents. Lombardo says it is still unnerving.
Lombardo said, “It does scare me because if you get hit with a rock or if you get hit with anything that can damage your windshield or any part of your car. You're risking your life and your children's life.”
No one was injured and the children and staff were transported safely back to school on another bus. The sheriff's office is still investigating the incident and they are not yet connecting to any of the other highway incidents.
