Rochester is proving that it is a golf town this week. The top female amateurs in the country are at the Country Club of Rochester, while the males are at the Monroe Golf Club for one of Rochester’s classic tournaments.
Since 1937, future golf stars have taken their swings at the Monroe Invitational. Champions include former PGA champion Jeff Sluman and Dustin Johnson, who is ranked 15th in the world.
This week, another future star plays the course at Monroe. Gavin Hall is familiar with it. Hall grew up right around the corner. The Pittsford native just finished up his freshman year at Texas. This time last year, Gavin was playing in the U.S. Open. He didn't qualify this year.
Gavin shot a one-under 69 Wednesday. He is tied for 13th. Pittsford Sutherland’s Jack Gianniny is fresh off a state championship. He shot one-over 71 and is tied for 37th.
After Round One, it is McQuaid alum Trevor Sluman in the lead with a one-stroke lead at five under 65.
