How safe is it to cross the street? That’s the question being asked in the City of Canandaigua from pedestrians to city officials to business owners.

Megan Brandow, a reporter with our news partner at the Messenger Post Newspapers, is taking an in-depth look at the issue in Sunday’s edition of the Daily Messenger. She talked about three mid-block crosswalks that do not have signals in the business district. She also looks at the number of pedestrian accidents and deaths. The most recent was in September 2013.

Brandow says Main Street business owners are on the front lines and see the problems with crosswalks safety every day.

Ken Gulvan, hot dog stand owner, said, "When to walk? People don't realize they have to push the button again. People need more pedestrian education."

Who is responsible? Pedestrians? The City of Canandaigua? The New York State Department of Transportation? You can read Megan Brandow's report in the Sunday edition of the Daily Messenger and online
