NBC News is reporting that the Pentagon has ordered an aircraft carrier, along with two other ships, to the Persian Gulf as President Obama weighs a possible strike.
According to NBC News, aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush, guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea and guided-missile destroyer USS Truxtun are headed towards the gulf. President Obama is considering military options to assist the Iraqi government as Islamic groups continue to push towards Baghdad.
President Obama said on Friday that if the U.S. is to assist, the government must make political concessions in order to help stabilize the country.
"We can't do it for them," said President Obama. "In the absence of this type of political effort, short-term military action, including any assistance we might provide, won't succeed."
The president also says he is not considering putting troops on the ground. The Pentagon says the ships may be in place by Saturday evening.
