A city man is in stable condition after police say he hit a utility pole on Dewey Avenue.
Rochester Police say the 25-year-old man was driving north on Dewey just north of McCall Road in the area of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery around 5 a.m. Sunday morning. Officers say it appears the man went off the road and hit the utility pole -- sheering it off its base. The vehicle came to a rest about 75 yards off the road way, according to investigators.
When police and firefighters got to the scene, the man was trapped underneath his car. Firefighters were able to free him from the wreck and he was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
Officers say he is currently in stable condition. Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash, but the investigation is still underway and Dewey Avenue is closed between Winchester Street and Bennington Drive.
