With summer vacation just around the corner, children that depend on school lunches to keep them fed could go hungry. That's why the Rochester City School District, the City of Rochester and Foodlink are teaming up for the second year to provide free meals to children in low-income areas.

Dozens of locations will open up across Rochester, serving free breakfast, lunch and sometimes dinner to kids 18 and younger.

Because of Rochester’s poverty level, organizers say all kids under 18 are eligible for the meals. It’s an effort to make sure kids are getting the meals they need when they are not at school.

Co-Executive Director of Foodlink Jeanette Batiste said, “We believe in wholesome ingredients, real cooking, so we do the best we can with local produce especially as we come into the harvest season here in upstate New York incorporating as much good produce as we can into our meals. This is done right at Freshwise Kitchen."

The program begins June 30 and will run through late August. For more information about the program and to find the location closest to you, call 211.

Last summer, almost 326,000 meals were served to city children.
