Three senior citizens were taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation after a fire at a Brighton nursing home.

More than eight emergency crews were called to the scene at the Brightonian Nursing Home on Elmwood Avenue around 11 p.m. Monday. Fire officials say a small fire started in one of the rooms of the two-wing building, causing smoke to spread quickly throughout the floor. Crews evacuated 22 residents from the building.

Brighton Fire Chief Stephen MacAdam said residents who were unable to evacuate were sheltered by smoke doors. Officials say everyone is expected to be okay.

Investigators say they are still working on determining a cause for the fire.
