Community members gathered Thursday morning to support a program helping some at-risk women turn their life around.

The Volunteers of America "Celebration of Women" breakfast raises awareness and proceeds for "Step-by Step." Today's event helps "step by step" work with women who've been in jail or are at risk for arrest.

VOA President and CEO Joanne Ryan said, “It's an evidence-based program with eight workshops that really help women to do the really hard work about finding out why they made the choices they did and really finding a way to make difference choices. The beauty is moving from dependence to independence to being back home with their children.

More than 4,500 women have completed the Step-by-Step program since it began 22 years ago.
