Jazz fans will line downtown Rochester starting tonight for the kickoff of the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival.
Trumpet player Mike Kaupa and bass player Lochlan Boebel will perform in a free concert tonight. Lochlan is a Bloomfield High School graduate. Both performers say playing in the festival is only part of the excitement that lasts through next weekend downtown.
Kaupa said, “I get to not only play with some great people in front of a huge crowd, but when that's over, I get to go over and hear some great musicians from out of town and I get to do it for the next nine days, it's a big party.”
Kaupa and Boebel will perform in a free concert tonight at 6 p.m. at the Jazz Street Stage on Gibbs Street. Tonight's headliner is Janelle Monae at Kodak Hall.
Some of the free concerts tonight include the Hilton High School Jazz Band on Gibbs Street at 4:30 p.m. and Big Bad voodoo Daddy at 9 p.m. at the East Avenue and Chestnut Street stage.
