We've learned surprising details involving the Wayne County couple ambushed and shot in the city. 70-year-old Vincent Defranco and 65-year-old Sally King are recovering tonight, but why would they be targeted?
Police say the shooters appeared to be waiting for them. And we found out it may be related to the poker business they run on-line.
The couple run poker games through a website called "Rochester NY Poker." On the website it lists a game Thursday night in a warehouse where police say the couple was shot. Police say the shooters -- two white males -- were hiding near the railroad tracks and appeared to "be in waiting."
The couple shot live at 1907 Ridge Road in Ontario, Wayne County. They didn't come to the door when we rang today. So we went to their daughter's house three doors down.
Brean: How are they doing?
Daughter: I don't really want to talk about it. They're fine.
Daughter: They're home resting.
Brean: We can't figure out how they could get shot at that place at that hour. Do you know what they were doing down there?
Daughter: No, you'll have to talk to them. They were just with some friends. so...
The daughter wouldn't give us any more information.
But here's what we learned.
We went to the website "Rochester NY Poker." It shows pictures of large poker tables at two locations.
First -- 1907 Ridge Road, the home of the victims.
And second -- 1275 Mount Read Boulevard, where the shooting was last night.
And if you look at the calendar of events, it shows a $300 cash poker game last night at the Mt. Read location.
No one answered the bell at the door when we went there today.
In the police report, RPD say Defranco and King "left an activity" at the Mt. Read warehouse.
Back in Wayne County, we broke the news to some of the neighbors.
"I was shocked. very shocked," Phil Knights said. "I heard the couple was from Ontario. Didn't know it would be next door neighbor."
We talked to several officials in the Town of Ontario. They say about five years ago they ordered the poker games to stop at 1907 Ridge Road, where Defranco and King live. It violated the zoning laws. The state says if the "house" doesn't make money -- poker games are legal.
We asked Rochester Police if they're investigating the poker game. They didn't answer that. We do know they're still looking for the shooters.
