He won his first election for Congress in 1970 by taking on an iconic Harlem politician and eking out a close victory. Now U.S. Rep. Charlie Rangel is the Harlem icon, and he's hoping his opponents don't do the same thing to him.

Rangel is running for his 23rd term. His opponents on Tuesday in the Democratic primary for the 13th Congressional District include state Sen. Adriano Espaillat as well as Harlem minister Rev. Michael Walrond Jr.

Other key races around the state include Republican and Democratic primaries in the 4th District on Long Island to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy. In the 21st District upstate, two Republicans are in a primary to take on a Democratic opponent in the campaign to replace retiring U.S. Rep. Bill Owens.
