Two people were killed after a tree fell on top of their moving car. Witnesses say there were heavy rains in the area at the time and investigators believe the weather ultimately caused the tree to come down.
The incident happened just before 5:30 p.m. on County Road 6 in Oaks Corners, which is just outside of Phelps. Workers are still on scene clearing the road and restoring electricity to the area.
It was around 5:20 p.m. Tuesday when people who live on Pre Emption Road in Oaks Corners say the weather turned violent. The sky grew dark and then there was a loud crash. Richard Field was sitting down to dinner, but the noise prompted him to go outside and look.
Field said, “When I got outside, the next door neighbor boy, I asked him, and he said a tree went down in the road. That’s all I knew at the time.”
The limb of a large locust tree split and toppled, landing on the car, killing two people inside.
Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero said, “The two occupants, a male and a female, who are presumably in their twenties, were killed on impact.”
Ontario County Sheriff Phil Povero says the couple probably didn’t see it coming.
Povero says the investigation has been slow due to downed power lines. Once the lines were de-energized, the recovery effort began. He says the road will likely remain closed through the night.
