A 14-year-old girl was hurt after being shot while sitting on a porch on the city's north side. It's the second serious shooting in that area in just a matter of hours.
Earlier on Thursday, an 18-year-old was shot and killed on Boston Street off Joseph Avenue. A 25-year-old man was also injured in that shooting. Then, around 7:30 p.m., the 14-year-old girl was shot on Burbank Street near Remington Street -- just about a half mile away.
Police say the young girl was an innocent bystander. We are told the 14-year-old was sitting on a porch on Burbank Street, when she was shot. Officers say the shooter was standing on Leo Street, which is quite a distance away.
Units responded to the area just before 8 p.m. After their investigation, they believe the shooter was standing in the middle of Leo Street, shooting down Burbank at an unknown target, when the 14-year-old was hit. They believe the shooter was using a handgun. Thankfully, the girl is in stable condition tonight, but police say this kind of shooting in daylight is disturbing.
"It's very tragic," says Lt. Joseph Hayes. She was a ways away from where the shooting occurred -- mid-block down Leo. There were more shots fired, so potentially there could have been more victims. It's summertime, there's kids out playing, there's families out enjoying the warm weather."
The question many have tonight is: are these two shootings -- just blocks away from one another -- connected?
"At this point, it's too early to say, to be honest with you," says Lt. Hayes. "We'll do a comparison on casings just to try to verify, but at this point I don't have any information that can confirm anything like that."
We checked with police they do not have anyone in custody for either of the shootings. The 14-year-old girl is in stable condition and at this time we do not know the condition of the 25-year-old man shot on Boston Street.
