Created: 06/29/2014 10:50 AM WHEC.com

The New York firefighters' association is urging people to leave Fourth of July fireworks to the professionals.

The Firemen's Association of the State of New York says that attending public fireworks displays is the safest way to celebrate the upcoming holiday. The group said fireworks are illegal to own or use by anyone other than licensed professionals in New York.

The group cites figures that show thousands of people are injured every Fourth of July while using consumer fireworks.
