Thousands of people are in the dark after thunderstorms made their way across the area on Sunday.

Officials from Rochester Gas and Electric say those outages were caused by lightning downing power lines and tree branches.

RG&E says crews were on standby in anticipation of the storms.

Crews are still working to restore power to customers. More than 5,000 customers are currently without power; more than 2,500 in Monroe County and 1,800 in Wayne County.

The hardest hit area was in Walworth with more than 1,000 outages.
