Today is the first day of the City of Rochester’s summer recreation program. Kids can go to any recreation or community center and join the programs for free instead of going to school Monday through Friday.
The City has focused on improving the centers. Last June, the Humboldt Street Center showed off its new features – air-conditioned game rooms and computer rooms. Some centers even have fitness rooms and one has a music recording studio.
Now there is an effort to re-brand all 27 recreation and community centers. The City Commissioner of Recreation and Youth Services asked the kids what to call them and they picked “R Centers”.
Commissioner Marisol Ramos-Lopez said, “R Centers really stands for recreation, responsibility, respect and as one of the kids put it, ours. So that's a really good way to start getting our youth into our centers and re-brand the work that we are doing.”
There are a number of free camps for families to check out. For more information, call the Bureau of Recreation at 585-428-6755 or click here for more information.
