Two people are dead after a fiery five car crash on the Thruway. Witnesses say they saw a dump truck cross over the median and that’s when police say it hit at least one car and a tractor trailer.

It happened late Monday afternoon in the westbound lanes between Exit 45 to Victor and Exit 46 to Henrietta near the West Bloomfield Road overpass.

News10NBC spoke to a number of people who saw the crash and what happened in the moments right after. They describe what they saw as something out of a movie.

Mark Mahanger said, “I was basically just driving when I saw the dump truck over there lose control. The second it happened and I immediately slammed on my brakes.”

Mark Mahanger was able to stop, but says a tractor trailer couldn't.

Mahanger said, “While the guardrail was hitting my car, I basically saw an 18 wheeler come flying by in this lane.”

Mahanger called 911 right away. He says the tractor trailer went up in flames. That was something that Peter Floramo heard while working on a home nearby the Thruway.

Peter Floramo said, “Next thing we know, we heard a loud explosion. It was something I had never heard before. So we ran through the field and got to the Thruway and that is when we saw a truck completely engulfed in flames.”

Floramo says the magnitude of the crash was something he has never seen before.

Floramo said, “The explosions, people were screaming and you kind of felt helpless because there was nothing I could do to help these people.”

Mahanger is left in shock tonight also. He says he prays for the families of those who were killed and is thankful for his quick reaction.

Mahanger said, “If I wasn't paying attention when that driver lost control, I would have been 30 to 40 feet up the road and right in the middle of it.”

Mahanger says he did see the tractor trailer driver get out. As for the dump truck that crossed the road, it was a B & B Recycling truck. News10NBC called the company and they did confirm that their driver was involved and that he is at Strong Hospital.

The westbound lanes of the Thruway from Exit 45 to Exit 46 are still closed right now.
