The Rochester Red Wings smacked three home runs and got six strong innings from Scott Diamond to defeat the Norfolk Tides, 8-1 Monday night at Frontier Field. The Wings beat the Tides 8-1 for the second consecutive night and have now won games on consecutive days for the first time since June 6 (@ CHA) and June 7 (@ GWN). Rochester is now 14-5 against Norfolk over the last 2-plus seasons.
Doug Bernier (2-for-4; HR, 4 RBI) smashed a grand slam into the left field bullpen in the fifth inning giving the Wings a 5-1 edge. Bernier finished with a tied for career-high four RBI. It was Bernier’s 7th career 4-RBI game and first since June 19, 2013 vs. SWB. The grand slam was Bernier’s second of his career and first since June 16, 2008 with Colorado Springs. The slick fielding shortstop now has 4 homers on the season – the 2nd highest total for any season in his career (9 in 2008 w/ Colorado Springs). Bernier has 7 HR in 160 career games with the Red Wings after hitting just one HR in his previous 301 IL games with SWB and IND. Bernier is batting .315 (35-for-111) with 2 HR, 4 doubles, 18 runs and 21 RBI over his last 35 games since May 17.
Doug Bernier’s grand slam was the Wings’ IL-leading sixth of the season, with four of them coming at Frontier Field. The last three Wings grand slams have been hit at home, with the previous slam coming from Daniel Ortiz on June 19 vs. PAW. The Wings have now hit 27% (6-of-22) of the slams in the IL this season despite being tied for last in the league with 50 homers. Of the 50 homers hit by Rochester this season, 32 have come with at least 1 runner on (64%)...Almost one-third of the home runs have come with at least 2 runners on (16 of 50; 32 %).
Chris Colabello (2-for-4; HR, RBI) launched a home run over the left field bullpen in the fourth inning to tie the game at 1-1. The home run – his 4th of the season -- was his first at Frontier Field since June 20, 2013 vs. SWB. In fact, Colabello’s last 12 Triple-A home runs have all come on the road. In his last 28 games with Rochester, Colabello’s batting .314 (32-for-102) with eight doubles, four home runs and 20 RBI.
Scott Diamond pitched six innings allowing one run on three hits and a walk while striking out three in his 75 pitch outing (50 strikes). Diamond improved his record to 4-7 on the season and lowered his ERA to 6.56. The lefty continued his dominance over the Tides moving to 4-1 with a 1.42 ERA in 5 career starts.
Lester Oliveros made his 2014 Frontier Field debut tossing two perfect innings striking out two batters. Oliveros has allowed just one run over his last 16 appearances (0.47 ERA) combined between New Britain (AA) and Rochester.
Eric Farris (1-for-5; R) extended his hitting streak to six games, batting .321 (9-for-28) with 3 2B, 3 R, and 3 RBI over the stretch.
Deibinson Romero (2-for-4; HR, 2B, 3 RBI) cranked a mammoth three-run homer to left field in the seventh inning for his team-leading sixth home run of the season.
