One man is under arrest and a second is in custody following a search that spanned most of the early morning hours. New York State Police say this all began with a shooting in the village of Bath.
Multiple police agencies worked together on this investigation, which covered three different counties. It began in the Southern Tier.
Right now, Steven Alexander, of Rochester, is the only person under arrest. He's facing an assault charge. Troopers say more charges are possible.
The suspects spent several hours inside the state police barracks answering questions. Steven Alexander just shrugged when he was confronted outside the state police barracks.
Captain Rick Allen, New York State Police, said, “We're still trying to sort everything out. We have a lot of witnesses, a lot of people involved in this.”
Alexander is charged in connection with a shooting early Tuesday morning in Bath. News10NBC’s affiliate in Elmira spoke with a neighbor who heard it happen. She wanted her identity to be concealed.
“I heard two males right outside my room in the hallway arguing and I heard glass break. Then I heard two pops and apparently that was when he got shot.”
Then investigators say Alexander took off in a car with two other men, but when officers tried to pull them over in Lima, they crashed the car and ran off. Eventually, two of them ended up at a cornfield in Monroe County.
Captain Allen said, “We got a call from a citizen who saw two males going across the road near the Tractor Supply in Honeoye Falls and entering the cornfield and we were able to stabilize shortly thereafter we were able to bring them into custody.”
The third man was picked up in Lima by Livingston County Sheriff Tom Dougherty.
Sheriff Tom Dougherty, Livingston County, said, “We saw a subject on a bicycle pulled up next to him and he ended up being one of our subjects.”
Exactly how they are all connected is still being sorted out by police. Right now, Alexander is the only one being charged.
Investigators say they are working to figure out what happened before and after that shooting in Bath. The victim remains in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.
