It was a big day for Greece native Brian Gionta. He was introduced as the newest member of the Buffalo Sabres.

Gionta joins a very young Buffalo organization that lacked veteran leadership last year. Gionta spent the past five seasons playing north of the border for the Montreal Canadiens. For many of those years, he served as captain.

It didn't take long for the Rochester native to agree to play for his hometown team. Free agency opened up Tuesday at noon and by 2:30 p.m., Gionta and Sabres General Manager Tim Murray had agreed on terms.

Gionta said he's thrilled to join the Sabres, the team he rooted for as a young player.
