A Penn Yan man is facing up to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted extortion of a local bank.

Prosecutors say on June 5, 21-year-old Jonathan Karcher threatened a manager at Lyons National Bank, demanding she drop $15,000 behind a dumpster across the street from the bank. Prosecutors say Karcher told that manager he had information about her address and her children. Investigators say later that day, he walked behind the dumpster to see if the cash had been dropped off.

Federal investigators say they tracked Karcher down through the analysis of records tied to the cell phone he used to call in the threat to the bank.

Federal investigators were assisted by members of the Penn Yan Police Department. Karcher's sentencing hearing is scheduled mid-September.
