A high rip current in the East River is forcing Macy's to shift its famed Fourth of July fireworks display slightly down river.

A spokesman says all three of their fireworks barges will now be positioned south of the Brooklyn Bridge for Friday night's festivities.

Organizers had planned to anchor one barge farther north between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges.

The spokesman says they made the move out of an abundance of caution.

They announced the move about two hours before the show's 9:20 p.m. start time.

Rain from Hurricane Arthur disrupted some New York-area celebrations earlier in the day.

The storm cleared in time for the Macy's display. It's the nation's largest.

Macy's says more than 1,600 shells will be launched per minute during the 25-minute display.
