News10NBC has learned that the majority of school districts in the Rochester area are declining state grants to launch universal, full-day Pre-K programs.
In the most recent state budget, Governor Cuomo set aside roughly $340-million to help school districts statewide launch the programs but only a small percentage of districts are applying.
The timeline of the grants is a big reason why. It requires districts to launch the full-day Pre-K program on their own dime and then be reimbursed a percentage of that cost in subsequent years. Only two school districts in Monroe County have expressed interest in applying for the grants. They are Fairport and Gates Chili Central School Districts. Here is a complete list of the districts statewide that are also looking to apply.
