Nathan Lieuwen's injury history can't be healed with a Band-Aid or cast. Not even surgery can reverse the damage.
The Amerks goalie has suffered several severe concussions throughout his career. The most recent came in April while in the Sabres net. With caution, Lieuwen has re-entered the pipes to chase his NHL dream.
The 22-year-old has been cleared to play again and he was on the ice the past two days at Sabres development camp working himself back into playing shape. Lieuwen played 32 games in Rochester last season, seven in Buffalo before the injury. He is expected to compete for the Amerks starting job.
His greatest challenge is overcoming the mental aspect.
Nathan Lieuwen said, “When you go through something like that, that's the difficult part. When you see the improvements, that's when you get encouraged. When you get back on the ice, it’s got to be out of your mind completely. That way you don't hold yourself back.”
