State police say a woman was killed after a motorcycle crash on I-590 northbound, near the Route 490 split on Saturday evening.
Officials say a man was driving the motorcycle, going northbound on 590, when his passenger was thrown from the bike while it was still in motion. Police say the woman died on impact.
A short time later, investigators say the driver of the motorcycle crashed into the cement siding on the highway. He was taken by ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital with what police believe are non-life threatening injuries.
So what caused the crash? Investigators say they are not entirely sure.
“We don’t know. She is deceased, and he’s being treated for his injuries. Once we talk to him we’ll have a better understanding of why she was ejected from the motorcycle,” said Trooper Mark O’Donnell.
Witnesses say the motorcycle was speeding in and out of traffic, and the roads were wet and slippery.
“It’s really dangerous to ride a motorcycle in the rain at a reasonable speed, much less at a high rate of speed,” said O’Donnell.
590 northbound was shut down to traffic for several hours while police conducted their investigation.
Investigators plan to talk to the operator to piece together exactly what happened. They say charges could be filed as early as Sunday.
