A Henrietta mother was killed in a crash late Saturday night after deputies say the other driver was drunk.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office says they were called to the intersection of Calkins Road and Hylan Drive around 11:15 p.m. for the report of a crash, where they found two cars with heavy damage, a Ford Focus and a Toyota SUV.
Investigators say 25-year-old Amanda Hunt smashed into the SUV at the intersection, killing 51-year-old Lisa Welk.
Deputies say Welk’s 15-year-old daughter, Shawna Smith, was in the car at the time of the crash. She was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for treatment and released.
Hunt was also taken to Strong Memorial Hospital and is listed in satisfactory condition. She was alone in the car.
Witnesses say a vehicle, matching Hunt’s car, was traveling at a high rate of speed and weaving in and out of traffic prior to the crash.
A close friend of Welk remembers their childhood together.
“We were Henrietta girls to begin with, and we grew up going to elementary school and junior high together,” said Bonnie Basom, a neighbor and friend.
Now, over forty years later, Basom lives just two doors down from her childhood friend.
“She was very social and engaging. She was very east to talk to. She would come over sometimes when I was doing work in my yard, and we would just strike up conversation,” Basom said.
Basom says this loss has sent a shockwave through the neighborhood.
“It’s not fair. Lisa was an everyday woman, busy taking care of her family and being a friend to others, and her life was snuffed away,” said Basom.
Hunt has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and DWI. Deputies say she was coming from a party. We’re told Saturday was her birthday.
