Authorities say two workers have been taken to the hospital after they were rescued from a trench collapse in Rye, New York.

Their conditions were not immediately available.

The Rye Fire Department summoned Con Edison, which used one of its trucks to help the remove debris. The people who were rescued do not work for the utility.

City Manager Frank Culross said the collapse occurred at midday Thursday outside a residence.

He says it appeared construction was going on there.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the house was occupied.
