The public is getting the rare opportunity to view Buffalo's Lake Erie waterfront from the top of the city's landmark lighthouse.

The Buffalo News reports that the old lens has been removed from atop the 180-year-old Buffalo Lighthouse while a new 650-pound lens is being made by a Florida engineer who specializes in building classic lighthouse lenses.

That means there's room at the top of the lighthouse for people to stand and admire the view of Lake Erie.

The Buffalo Lighthouse Association will conduct tours to the top of the 60-foot tower from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday during the organization's annual maritime festival. Tours will also be offered Aug. 10 to mark National Lighthouse Day.

The lighthouse is owned by the U.S. Coast Guard, which leases it to the association.
