Poverty is on the rise in suburban areas, according to a new study.
Researchers at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. report a nationwide increase in the number of distressed neighborhoods between 2000 and 2012. The number of poor residents in those areas is up 140 percent.
The study claims poverty is actually growing faster in the suburbs than in urban areas. Suburbs in the south and southwest saw the biggest spike in poverty.
