A man and a woman are in critical condition after a fire ripped through a home in Irondequoit. It happened just before 6 a.m. on Simpson Road.

Firefighters have been carrying out all of the items these people have lost as they try to piece together how the fire started early this morning.

Neighbors woke up to a cloud of black smoke. Connie DelVecchio said, “People going by all stopped and tried to get in there to help them and the next thing I know the fire trucks are here.”

All that remains is destroyed furniture, books and an air conditioner. Officials say at least the front of the house is a complete loss.

Fire investigators tell us it started in the living room. St. Paul Fire Department Chief Bill Dyrland said, “Heavy smoke inhalation and I do know they were performing CPR on the patient on the way to the hospital.”

Firefighters say a man and a woman were rescued from the home and rushed to the hospital. Chief Dyrland said, “First arriving personnel learned there were two people inside.” Sadly, the family dog did not make it out.
