On President Barack Obama's order, the U.S. military airdropped food and water to thousands of Iraqis threatened by Islamic militants, the Pentagon said Thursday night.
The humanitarian assistance was dropped by U.S. aircraft near the town of Sinjar in northwestern Iraq, according to a senior defense official. That official, confirmed the mission had been completed, spoke only on condition of anonymity ahead of a White House announcement.
Obama was to speak later in the evening.
