A federal database ranks two local colleges high on the number of reported cases of sexual assault in New York. The report comes from the U.S. Education Department.
It ranks RIT as number two and the University of Rochester as number four among colleges with the most sex offenses. But per capita, the schools are much lower on the list. RIT comes in at 31 and the U of R at 23.
An RIT spokesperson tells us the assaults per student are a better gauge and points out that the school has a high enrollment and encourages students to report any incidents. A spokesperson for the college issued a statement Friday afternoon saying in part, "RIT takes the issue of sexual offenses on campus seriously. We conduct numerous educational programs with students and staff throughout the year to raise awareness, and encourage reporting of situations so that we can provide appropriate services and support. RIT is committed to creating and maintaining a community in which students, faculty, and staff can work, learn, and live together in an atmosphere free of all forms of harassment, exploitation, intimidation, or assault. RIT seeks to maintain a community in which men and women are equally respected."
A spokesperson at the University of Rochester says that the sexual offenses also included incidents at Strong Memorial Hospital. In some of those cases, employees complained they were inappropriately touched by patients.
