In Monroe County, you have more than 20 Wegmans and Tops stores to choose from to shop for groceries so why the big deal over a new store called Hart's Local Grocers? It's the first grocery store to open in downtown Rochester in more than a decade.
It's located on Winthrop Street off East Avenue in the East End which is considered a food desert because it's an urban area where it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food.
Hart's is only a quarter the size of the smallest Wegmans store but has rows of conventional groceries as well as specialty foods and prepared items that will be made by chefs on site, which you can enjoy in the store or take to go.
The grocery store is named after a former store which opened in the 1800's and by 1929, there were 113 Hart's location in just about every neighborhood in the city.
