Deputies in Cayuga County say a father drowned in Lake Ontario Saturday afternoon while trying to save a child.

Sheriff David Gould says that deputies were called to the shore of Lake Ontario near the Cayuga and Oswego county border just before 4:30 p.m.

Deputies say 42-year-old Adam McKelvey, of Oswego, was swimming with his children and other family and friends near where Eight Mile Creek empties into the lake. Officials say one of the children began to struggle and McKelvey and others went to assist.

While trying to help the child, McKelvey became fatigued and slipped below the surface. The child was brought back to shore safely, but McKelvey was not. Deputies from Cayuga and Oswego counties responded to search for the man. Units located McKelvey's body and took him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies were assisted by New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Fair Haven Fire and Ambulance and Mentor Ambulance.
