We are learning more about the woman police say died after being hit by a car backing out of a driveway in Greece.
Barbara Brownlee was a mother, a grandmother and hospital volunteer. She was hit while walking on Eileen Drive Saturday.
We spoke with several neighbors off-camera today and many of them recall seeing Brownlee routinely walking her dog through the neighborhood. It’s what she was doing when she was hit and killed on her street.
A somber mood was cast over Unity Hospital today upon news of Barbara Brownlee’s death. Every Thursday she could be found checking people in at the hospital’s birthing center where she volunteered her time.
Brownlee was also involved with the Park Ridge Auxiliary, helping with the fundraising activities.
Park Ridge Auxiliary Coordinator Donna Sime said, “I noticed when I came in this morning that there was a little bit of a quieter tone with many of the volunteers as people found out. It was just very shocking. I just remember for a little tiny woman in size, she just was so involved, no matter what was happening she would just look at the positive side.”
On Saturday, 78-year-old Brownlee was walking down Eileen Drive when police say she was struck and killed just four houses down from where she lived by a neighbor who was backing out of her driveway.
Greece Police have provided few details and they have not named the driver of the car. Why the driver didn’t see Brownlee while backing up is still under investigation. However, they do say drugs and alcohol do not appear to have been a factor.
We learned Brownlee was also a long-time volunteer at Geva Theatre. In an emailed statement, theatre officials offered prayers to her family.
While Brownlee enjoyed giving her time to others, it was her family she most cherished. Sime said, “She was very dedicated to her grandchildren. She just enjoyed seeing them grow up and helping any way she could as far as attending any events they had going on and basically she just loved her family.”
We did attempt to speak with family but they have asked for privacy. Her funeral is scheduled for Thursday.
