If there is a big accident or if someone gets really ill on the west side of Monroe County, as of today, the patients can now be taken to an emergency department at Strong West. That located at the old Lakeside Memorial Hospital in Brockport.
Lindsey Gieger brought her daughter to Strong West because she's been running a 103 fever since Sunday and nothing was bringing it down. She's ecstatic an emergency department is open again in Brockport. They only live 15 miles away in Albion.
Since the Brockport hospital closed a year and a half ago, very sick patients and accidents victims had to go at least 20 miles to closest hospital for treatment. Now, they can go to Strong West for emergency treatment.
It's an extension of UR Medicine which runs Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital. It’s the first model like it in Upstate New York where the hospital is one location and there's a separate emergency department on a different campus.
Last September, Strong West opened an urgent care at this facility but it was only open seven hours a day at first. Now the signs have been changed to read “emergency” which means an emergency medicine physician will be on duty 24/7.
However, patients who need to be admitted to a hospital won't be able to stay at Strong West. They can decide along with their doctor which location around the region will be best for their situation and be transported there.
