A Livonia father is accused of leaving his two children home alone and while he was gone, sheriff’s deputies say a fire broke out.
Thirty-year-old Jason Gibson is charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Deputies say he left his one-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter alone while he ran to the store. After that, emergency crews were called to Gibson’s apartment on Lake Glen Drive for a reported fire.
Investigators say Jason Gibson left the stove on in his home while he walked a quarter mile to the store. His one-year-old son was sleeping on the couch.
“At the end of the day, it comes down to the parents. It's their responsibility to properly supervise and if someone's running to the store, it's totally unacceptable and our office will continue to make those arrests.” Sheriff Thomas Dougherty says Gibson admitted to asking his 11-year-old daughter watch the baby while he ran to the store. “The little girl was outside playing so she wasn't watching. You don't leave your children alone. You never do because you just don't know what's gonna happen.”
We tried to talk to Gibson today but no one was home.
The children are staying with a friend and Gibson has been released from jail. The sheriff says Child Protective Services will be following up.
