A former Rochester Police captain will serve both probation and jail time in the shooting death of his son. Today, Michael Leach was sentenced to five years of probation and he'll have to spend the first 180 days of that in the Herkimer County Jail.

Leach pled guilty to criminally negligent homicide in June. Police say he shot and killed his 37-year-old son Matthew while the two were at a motel in the Adirondacks in 2012.

Linda Leach, Matthew Leach's mom, spoke at court today. “I know what my son would want and he certainly would not want the way this turned out. He was a very loving son and the family supports Mike 110-percent."

We’re told Leach will begin the 180 days in jail today.
