More than a week after he was run down on Howard Road in Gates, a makeshift memorial to Joey Pacheco still exists at the place where he died.
Today, police say they have the person they believe hit him. She is 20-year-old Mariah Eccleston of Greece. Eccleston was charged today with leaving the scene of a personal injury accident that resulted in death.
Pacheco's uncle, Robert Ralston, expressed relief that an arrest was made, but wondered if Rccleston had any remorse. “You look at people and usually if they feel bad you can see some kind of remorse in their face. I don't seem to see any in her face."
Pacheco was walking home from a coffee shop just after midnight last Tuesday when he was hit by a driver who police say failed to stop. A witness saw a gray Chrysler Sebring leaving the scene.
Within 18 hours, police had impounded the car, which had major damage to the passenger side windshield and bumper. Police will not say where Eccleston was coming from, whether anyone else was in the car, or whether drugs or alcohol may have been a factor. Eccleston was arraigned in Gates Town Court and released on $2,500 bail.
We went to her family's home this afternoon, but no one answered the door. We asked Ralston what he'd like Eccleston to know about his nephew. “I'd like to tell her Joey was an outstanding young man. He gave to everybody, strangers, give the shirt off his back. We saw that many times. Joey was an inspiring young man about to lead a full life."
Right now, Eccleston is only charged with the one felony count but that could change and more charges could be forthcoming once this goes before the grand jury.
