Gates Police say they arrested five people Friday night and Saturday morning during a DWI Sobriety Checkpoint. We’re told one was a 50-year-old SUNY Geneseo Public Safety Officer.

Investigators say Carl W. Altman of Stafford was charged with DWI and failing to obey a police officer. We’re told he will appear at the Gates Justice Court in September.

SUNY Geneseo released the following statement following the arrest:

“The matter is under investigation and since it's a personnel matter, we're not able to comment further.”

According to police, the checkpoint was part of the New York State Stop DWI Labor Day crackdown. Police say the crackdown serves as a reminder to not drink and drive. It runs August 15 through September 1.
