Local Ukrainians gathered together of Sunday in Irondequoit to celebrate 23 years of independence from the Soviet Union.

The Ukrainian community celebrated the country’s Independence Day, as did fellow Ukrainians from all over the world.

Several local politicians attended the event.

This year’s celebration came with mixed emotions as conflict continues in parts of Ukraine between the government and pro-Russian rebels.

Representative Louise Slaughter spoke on the United States’ role in this ongoing conflict.

“We have been the hope for so long for so many, and we have done the best we can. We are very much concerned now, again, as Vladimir Putin tries to reestablish the Soviet Union,” said Representative Slaughter.

The United Nations estimates that more than 2,000 civilians have been killed in the fighting since April, and the death toll is rising daily.
