Today is one day of the school year that students are typically happy to be going back to class – especially when wearing that first day of school outfit.

This morning, Leance Gamble’s back-to-school outfit caught our eye. Gamble is a tenth grade student in the Brighton district. “My mom picked out the shoes and she had found the shirt and so I just came up with this.”

Emerson Senden was on campus 45 minutes before school opened. Why? He told us he needed to go across the street to Starbucks before the first bell. He said, “Because I need my 100 milligrams of caffeine every day.”

Even politicians were at the 12 Corners. Brighton Town Supervisor Bill Moehle wanted to welcome the crossing guards back for another year of protecting kids. “We want to make sure going back to school that people are on the lookout for kids and really conscious of the high level of traffic volumes that we have.”

In June, AAA awarded the Brighton guards a gold medal for their safety results.

On Wednesday, Rochester schools open in the largest district in Monroe County. Several thousand of the 32,000 students walk to school so keep that in mind while driving through school zones Wednesday.
