The Republican trying to oust New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the state constitution should be changed to allow direct election of the Board of Regents.
GOP candidate Rob Astorino says that under the current system, Democratic Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver has too much power in selecting regents.
Astorino, the Westchester County executive, says that if politicians don't support the change, it could be forced during a constitutional convention in 2018.
Astorino outlined several education proposals at a news conference Tuesday outside an elementary school in Hawthorne.
He called for New York high schools to grant three varieties of diplomas: for the humanities; science and technology; and vocational studies.
He also called for teaching foreign languages in elementary schools.
And he repeated his call to dump the Common Core curriculum.
