A brand new area high school welcomed its first freshman class Wednesday morning.

Saint John Bosco Schools of East Rochester has added a high school program called "The Chesterton Academy".

Saint John Bosco is an independent Catholic school that opened in 2008. It's on Garfield Street in East Rochester. Until now, that school has only had classes from pre-k up through eighth grade.

St. John Bosco does not have to abide by the Common Core and school officials say there's been a demand to open a high school on that campus.
